Buy better in four minutes a week.
Most buying problems don't begin in bulk production. They begin much earlier — with the wrong supplier, an unclear brief, a weak cost assumption, an untested wash, or a risk nobody challenged. Every Tuesday I share one practical lesson to help you spot those problems earlier and make stronger commercial decisions.
- ✓Choose the right factory for the right product — not just the cheapest quote.
- ✓Build stronger briefs and cut sampling rounds — the right sample, first time.
- ✓Understand the real drivers behind FOB prices — where cost actually sits.
- ✓Strengthen product development and R&D — from early idea to commercial collection.
- ✓Control quality before the final inspection — not after it fails.
- ✓Use wash, fabric and construction to create genuinely better products.
- ✓Balance MOQ, speed, margin and risk — test small, scale the winners.
- ✓Use AI intelligently — without losing human judgement.
One idea. One real example. One action you can use.
No recycled theory. No weekly sales pitch. Just useful apparel sourcing and product knowledge — drawn from real development and manufacturing experience.
The topics, rotating every Tuesday.
Each issue takes one theme and gives you the numbers, the script or the checklist to act on it — across hoodies, jerseys, denim and woven casuals in equal measure.
Costing & price engineering
Read a garment cost sheet like a supplier — fabric, wastage, CM, trims, finishing — and find the real FOB drivers to push on.
Product development & R&D
From early idea to commercial collection: fabric, wash and construction innovation, and turning R&D into styles that sell — across all four categories.
Supplier selection & risk
Match product to factory capability, and the vetting routine — BSCI, Sedex, SA8000, traceability — that flags a problem before you order.
Sampling & critical path
Cut sampling rounds. Briefs, tech packs and follow-up that get the right sample first time, in 2–3 weeks.
Quality control
Build quality in before the final inspection — AQL, pre-production approval, in-line checkpoints and corrective action.
Fabric, wash & construction
Denim wash recipes and EIM scores, knit GSM and spirality, woven seam quality — the technical calls that make a better product.
Low-MOQ testing strategy
Launch new styles, colours and washes from 500 pcs, read what customers respond to, and scale only the winners.
Trade, tariffs & sustainability
Post-Brexit duty, sourcing-country shifts and getting ahead of EU rules — CSDDD, the Digital Product Passport, GOTS & GRS.
AI for buyers & sourcing teams
Where AI genuinely speeds up costing, comms and development — and where human judgement still has to win.
I was employed at H&M, G-Star RAW and Newstar Group. The retail names above (New Look, Very, Miss Selfridge, Burton, Topman) were client accounts during my Newstar years, and the RBT brands are current manufacturing clients — all shown as work history, not as endorsements of this newsletter.
I've been on both sides of every order you place.
I've spent nearly 20 years working across apparel sourcing, product development and manufacturing.
I worked with H&M, then spent five years at G-Star RAW supporting sourcing and product development across Asia — denim, jersey, wash innovation, product R&D, and turning early ideas into commercial collections. At Newstar Group in the UK, I moved from product development into account management, responsible for around £5 million in annual business. That taught me a good product is only part of the job — buyers also need the right price, timing, supplier allocation, risk control and commercial judgement.
Today I run RBT, an apparel manufacturer working across the UK and Bangladesh. Being on the supplier side gives me another view of the same decisions buyers make every day. In The Inside Buyer, I share what worked, what failed, what I learned — and what you can apply immediately.

trueFOB — know your real cost before you brief a supplier.
Stop waiting 3–7 days for a costing to land in your inbox. In about 60 seconds, trueFOB gives you an indicative FOB — and what it lands at in your market — so you can move while everyone else waits on a quote.
Designers design to a target FOB from the first sketch — fabric, wash and trims chosen against a real price, not a hope.
Buyers build a full range and margin plan without supplier-costing dependency — brief only what already works commercially.
Sourcing teams sanity-check any quote in seconds and negotiate from a number, not a guess.
Indicative estimate for early decisions only — built on typical rate cards. Adjust the inputs to your own fabric, factory and terms.

From trainee to CEO — anyone who touches the product.
If you develop, source, buy, make or move apparel, there's a lesson here for you every week.
Whatever your title, if apparel margin, quality or delivery is your problem — this is written for you.
The quick answers.
Who is The Inside Buyer for?
Apparel buyers, sourcing and procurement managers, product developers, designers, merchandisers, production and operations teams, supply chain managers, buying directors, and small-to-mid brand founders — anyone from trainee to CEO who wants better products and stronger sourcing decisions.
What will I receive?
One concise email each week: a real sourcing, product or production situation, the lesson behind it, and a practical action you can use straight away.
Does it cover all product types?
Yes — hoodies, jerseys, denim and woven casuals, in equal measure. Whatever your category, you'll find issues written for it.
Do you cover product development and R&D?
Absolutely. Fabric, wash and construction innovation, tech packs, and turning early ideas into commercial collections are a core part of the letter — not just buying and costing.
How long does it take to read?
Around four minutes. It's built to be read on a Tuesday morning and used the same day.
When will it arrive?
Every Tuesday morning, UK time.
Is it free?
Yes. The Inside Buyer is free, and so is the trueFOB pre-check tool and rate-card sheet you get for joining. You can unsubscribe any time.
How accurate is trueFOB?
It’s an indicative pre-check, not a binding quote — built on typical rate cards so you can make early design, range and margin decisions in seconds instead of waiting days. Tune the inputs to your fabric, factory and terms, then confirm the final number with your supplier.
I'm junior / I'm senior — is it still for me?
Yes. Assistant buyers use it to ramp up faster; directors and founders use it to sharpen judgement and challenge earlier. The lessons scale with you.
Is this an RBT sales newsletter?
No. It's an educational newsletter written by Ruhul Talukder. RBT may appear when a real supplier-side example helps explain a lesson, but the purpose is to create value for buyers — not to sell factory capacity.
Will you share my email?
Never. Your details are used to send the newsletter and related resources only, in line with the Privacy Notice. Unsubscribe in one click.
Can I suggest a topic or ask a question?
Yes — reply to any issue or use the contact page. The best buyer questions often become future editions (anonymously, unless you give permission).
Can I forward it to my team?
Please do. If it helps a colleague, forward it — they can subscribe using the link in the email.
